About this postcard
The field breaks from the starting gate at Hialeah Park, the numbered stall doors swung open behind the horses, with a dense crowd along the rail and more spectators filling the grandstand. The printed caption gives the moment its own title, "They're Off," at the track on the outskirts of Miami. Hialeah opened in 1925 and, after Joseph Widener's renovation in the early 1930s, became the fashionable center of South Florida's winter racing season, known for its Mediterranean-style architecture and the flamingos kept in the infield. The caption's mention of "three flourishing tracks in the immediate vicinity" points to the crowded winter circuit that also included Tropical and Gulfstream parks.
