State Arsenal & Armory and Governor's Mansion, Springfield, Illinois, circa 1905

About this postcard

A chromolithograph view of the Illinois State Arsenal & Armory in Springfield — a long castellated stone building with crenellated towers, arched gateways and flags flying — with an oval inset below showing the Governor's Mansion, a stuccoed two-story executive residence with a cupola set among trees. The arsenal complex was erected at the turn of the twentieth century as a storage and drill site for the state's National Guard, while the Executive Mansion, completed in 1855, is among the oldest continuously occupied governor's residences in the United States. The card is framed by a decorative border of pink poppies and a band of yellow blossoms.
