A series of shallow rearing ponds fills the grounds of the state fish hatchery at Spooner, Wisconsin. Grass and young trees line the pond edges, a wooden flume or sluice runs along the right side, and a dirt path crosses the foreground. The ponds belonged to Wisconsin's state hatchery system, which raised fish fry for stocking lakes and streams. Spooner lies in northern Wisconsin's lake country, where hatchery-raised fish supported the region's inland waters.
