About this postcard
The card shows the State Historical Library in Madison, Wisconsin, a long classical building of Indiana limestone with a colonnade of tall Ionic columns above a rusticated base. An American flag flies from a pole in front, and large shade trees frame the lawn and roadway. The building is the headquarters of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, designed by Cass Gilbert and completed in 1900 on the university campus. Its reference library held about 300,000 volumes, described in the caption as one of the best in the United States, with nearly a million volumes for research and study and collections of historical mementoes.
