About this postcard
A hand-colored view looking north up State Street from Madison Street in Chicago, filled with a dense crowd, horse-drawn wagons, and several red-and-cream electric streetcars, with tall commercial blocks and awnings lining both sides. State Street was Chicago's principal retail thoroughfare, and the caption's claim to be the busiest street in the city reflects its role as the spine of the downtown Loop in the early 20th century. The card was published by Curt Teich & Co., the Chicago firm whose early numbered views were printed in Germany before its own plant opened.
