Card type

About this postcard

The card shows the massive Second Empire-style State, War, and Navy Building (today the Eisenhower Executive Office Building) in Washington, D.C., with its mansard roof, tall chimneys, columned porticoes and rows of dormers, seen from across a wide, empty street with a few pedestrians and small trees behind a low stone wall. Designed by Alfred B. Mullett and constructed between 1871 and 1888, the granite building housed the Departments of State, War and the Navy and stands just west of the White House. The Detroit Photographic Co. of Detroit, Michigan, issued this color view under a 1902 copyright.
