About this postcard

A red gravel path lined with tall clipped boxwood hedges leads to a white statue of James Monroe on a pedestal, with trees and open sky behind. The garden walk frames the monument at Ash Lawn, Monroe's estate outside Charlottesville. The statue was erected in 1931, the centennial of Monroe's death. Sculptor Attilio Piccirilli made it for the Venezuelan government, which commissioned the work in appreciation for the Monroe Doctrine's defense of Venezuela during its boundary dispute with Britain in the Cleveland administration. Ash Lawn was planned by Monroe's neighbor Thomas Jefferson and built in 1798 within sight of Monticello, about four miles from Charlottesville.
