About this postcard
Statue of Liberty seen from below, its torch raised above a stone pedestal, with an American flag hanging in a window of the base and hedges and flowers at the foot of the monument. The card identifies the site as Bedloe's Island, the harbor island later renamed Liberty Island. The statue was a gift from France, presented in 1884 and dedicated in 1886; August Bartholdi, the sculptor usually known as Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, designed it, with an iron framework by Gustave Eiffel, and Richard Morris Hunt designed the pedestal, paid for by public subscription. The low angle emphasizes the figure's scale.
