Statue of Liberty on Bedloes Island, New York Bay, 1944

About this postcard

The photograph shows the Statue of Liberty rising from its stone pedestal on the star-shaped base of Fort Wood, seen across New York Bay. Small figures of visitors stand on the lawn and walkway below the pedestal. Bedloes Island, as the card names it, was the site's designation until it was renamed Liberty Island in 1956. By the 1940s the statue was a national monument and a familiar harbor landmark, its pedestal still set within the old fort's footprint. During the war years New York Harbor was a busy port of embarkation, and the statue remained a constant landmark for ships entering and leaving.

Message · English, in pen

Dear Bob: I am spending a few days in N.Y. and will be on my way home shortly. We left here for four days. Nothing to do but sleep, run around until we're too tired to and then sleep again. These days are great, and I've been in the Empire State Bldg so far. I'll write and tell you about it later. Guy
