Steam locomotive in the Cascade Mountains, WA, circa 1930

About this postcard

An orange-red passenger train led by a black steam locomotive, number 10294, curves along a track cut into a forested mountainside. Evergreen trees and a rocky, flower-dotted slope frame the scene, with a mountain peak rising at left under a pale blue sky. The printed text calls the range "verdant and beautiful, always," a country of game preserves, gold and silver mines, mountain lakes, towering peaks, and giant forests. Railroads had crossed the Cascades since the 1890s, and by the 1930s through passenger trains made the range a scenic stretch of the journey between Puget Sound and the East.
