An elevated view of the New Orleans levee, where rows of cotton bales cover the wharf and workers move among them carrying sacks. Steamboats and a railroad car line the water; smokestacks, warehouses, and a steamer trailing smoke fill the background. New Orleans was then a leading cotton port, and the riverfront depended on steamboats and rail connections to move the crop.
