Two steamboats pass on Lake Erie at night, their decks illuminated and stacks trailing smoke. Searchlights sweep across choppy water beneath a full moon, giving the scene a theatrical quality. Lake Erie carried heavy steamer traffic between ports, and night views of the lake made striking postcard subjects.
