About this postcard
A paddle steamer lies alongside the wooden pier at Garelochhead, framed by overhanging tree branches, with the village and low hills of the Gare Loch shore behind. Garelochhead, at the head of the Gare Loch in Argyll and Bute, was a popular Clyde coast resort reached by the steamers that called at its pier, and the village grew up around the railway and steamer traffic of the later 19th century. The pier structure and the vessel's tall funnel and paddle box are typical of the Clyde passenger steamers of the period.
