About this postcard

The steamer Gay Head lies beside a wooden pier crowded with excursionists, several holding umbrellas. The vessel's name is lettered along its white hull. Gay Head was a coastal steamer of the New Bedford, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamboat Company, a familiar vessel on the island route out of New Bedford. The scene reflects the excursion trade that carried travelers between mainland ports and the islands.
