About this postcard

The picture shows the steamer Gay Head, its name lettered along the white hull, beside a wooden pier crowded with excursionists, several holding umbrellas. The Gay Head was a coastal steamer of the New Bedford, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamboat Company, long associated with the island route out of New Bedford. The printed caption identifies the vessel simply as "Steamer 'GAY HEAD'."
