About this postcard
A small coal-fired steamer with a smoking stack crosses the blue water of Newburyport Harbor, seen from a rough stone wharf with wooden pilings in the foreground; across the water lies low-lying Rings Island with a scatter of white houses and trees under a pale peach and blue sky. Rings Island sits at the mouth of the Merrimack River where it meets the harbor, and Newburyport was long a busy shipping and shipbuilding port before giving way to textile and shoe manufacturing in the nineteenth century. The card's tinted sky and visible halftone dot pattern are typical of inexpensive color-printed views of the era.
