Stenographer aboard the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Pennsylvania Special", circa 1910

Card type

About this postcard

A color view of the mahogany-paneled interior of a Pennsylvania Railroad club or observation car, where a male stenographer in a gray suit sits at a folding desk with a typewriter, a potted palm and arched ceiling above him. The caption identifies him as the stenographer of the "Pennsylvania Special," whose services were offered free to passengers. The Pennsylvania Special was the railroad's all-Pullman New York–Chicago flyer, run from 1902 until it was renamed the Broadway Limited in 1912, and stenographic service was one of the amenities advertised to its first-class patrons.
