About this postcard

Color reproduction of an oil painting showing Stephen Collins Foster seated at a keyboard, his head resting on his right hand and a pen and paper in his left. He wears a dark suit and bow tie; a mottled brown wall and the carved back of a wooden chair fill the background. The caption identifies the room as the parlor of My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, Kentucky. Foster was a Pittsburgh-born songwriter whose parlor songs and minstrel melodies, including "My Old Kentucky Home," were widely sung in the 19th century. The Bardstown house, long a tourist destination, is the landmark tied to the song.
