The card pictures the Stephen Douglas Monument and Tomb in Douglas Square, Chicago, as named in the red printed caption: a tall column topped by a standing statue of Douglas, with seated figures at the base and the tomb entrance below. Stephen A. Douglas was an Illinois senator, a leading antebellum Democrat, and Abraham Lincoln's opponent in the 1858 debates; he died in 1861. The monument, designed by Leonard W. Volk, marks his burial place and was dedicated in 1861.
