About this postcard
A narrow flight of stone steps drops between a multi-story building on the left and a high brick wall on the right. One figure walks down, a basket balanced on their head, a common way of carrying loads in Italy at the time. Behind, a large building with two towers stands on a wooded slope. A pencil note on the back names the Villa Medici, the 16th-century villa on the Pincio in Rome that has housed the French Academy since 1803 and lodged winners of the Prix de Rome. The steps belong to the lanes that climb the hill from the center of the city, passing shuttered facades and garden walls.
