A winding road with a wooden guardrail curves along the steep, rocky flank of Storm King Mountain, looking north over the Hudson River. Pine trees frame the right side of the view, and the river and distant hills glow orange in the sunset.
The highway was cut into the granite above the Hudson and promoted as the most expensive road in the world, with the river more than 400 feet below. A local tradition holds that George Washington's soldiers crossed this mountain on the way to West Point.
