Street scene, Amherst Court House, VA, 1910

About this postcard

The view looks down a wide dirt street in Amherst Court House (now Amherst), the seat of Amherst County in Virginia's Piedmont. Frame commercial buildings with red and gray roofs line the road, including a storefront with a covered porch, and shade trees and horse-drawn wagons and buggies fill the scene. The town's older name, Amherst Court House, was still common on postcards of the period. The message is a chatty invitation to Mattie in Bridgewater, asking her to come for a visit and teasing her to "feed the calves and come along."

Dear old girl, How are you this morn? We are fixing to wash. I guess you are too. I hope that you all had a fine time at the chimneys, wish I could have been with you, but I had to come home to help Bertie wash. Say Mattie I want you to be sure and come down Sat eve. If you don't we will be disappointed. Tell Emma to feed the calves and come along Ha! This card is a little out of date your Mattie Say Mattie, I guess that mad spell is over now, come over to us soon again. I am awfully glad the next turn is ours.
