Studio portrait of a seated woman, circa 1907

About this postcard

A young woman sits on a slatted bench against a dark studio backdrop, one arm resting on the bench beside her, her hair swept up in the full pompadour style of the day. She wears a white high-collared blouse with soft puffed sleeves, the rounded silhouette that dominated women's daywear in the first years of the 1900s. The print fades to white at the edges in an oval vignette, a common studio device that kept attention on the sitter's face. Local studios turned out such portraits by the thousand in this period, often printed on real photo postcards that sitters could mail to family or paste into an album. The sitter here is unidentified, and the card was never sent or inscribed.
