About this postcard
A sepia-toned studio portrait of a young man, head and shoulders, in a dark suit jacket, white stiff-collared shirt, and light patterned tie. His hair is parted and combed flat, and he poses against a painted backdrop of soft clouds and hazy hills, a stock background common in small-town studios. No sitter name or studio mark identifies him. Henry Martsfield sent the card to his cousin John Onnen in Westfield, Iowa, writing that he had received Onnen's postcard and was pleased, and would send this one in return. Portrait postcards were an affordable way for families to exchange likenesses, and the message turns the image into a small family keepsake.
