About this postcard
A girl of about nine stands beside a turned-wood chair in a photographer's studio, one hand resting on the chair back. She wears a white dress with a ruffled collar and scalloped hem, white stockings, and dark strap shoes, posed against a painted backdrop showing a window and foliage. The pencil note on the back names her as Helen and says the picture was taken on her ninth birthday, with an apology that no copy had been sent earlier. Real-photo postcards let families turn a finished studio portrait into something mailable for the price of a stamp, and a child's birthday was a common reason to sit for one. The plain dress, the painted backdrop, and the stiff standing pose follow the conventions of small-town studio work in the 1910s and 1920s.
