Sturgeon on the Columbia River, Oregon, 1906

Card type
Lithograph

About this postcard

A heap of sturgeon lies on a wooden landing at the edge of the Columbia River, the fish stacked higher than the boy in a red coat and cap who sits among them. Forested hills and a low shoreline rise across the water behind the catch. At the time, the Columbia carried one of the country's great freshwater fisheries, and white sturgeon weighing hundreds of pounds were netted, canned, and shipped to markets in the East. The Detroit Photographic Co. issued this view as a color lithograph postcard, part of a large catalog of American scenery sold to travelers and collectors.
