Sugar Bowl, Grotto Rock, Ink Stand, Lower Dells, WI, 1952

About this postcard

Layered sandstone formations rise from the Wisconsin River in the Lower Dells, pines growing from their tops and a wooded shoreline behind. The printed caption names three of them: Sugar Bowl, Grotto Rock, and Ink Stand. The Dells are a gorge the Wisconsin River cut through Cambrian sandstone. Excursion steamboats had carried visitors past these formations since the late 1800s, and by the 1950s the area had become a family resort destination reached by car, with the named rocks still the standard stops for sightseers.
