Summer house at top of Washington Rock, Millburn, NJ, circa 1910

About this postcard

A rustic summer house of log construction stands at the top of Washington Rock, with a hipped roof of bark-covered poles, a cross-braced log railing, and stone piers. The open shelter overlooks a hazy valley from the crest of the rock. Washington Rock, in the Watchung hills above Millburn, was long associated with George Washington's use of the heights as a lookout during the Revolutionary War. By the early 1900s the surrounding heights were part of South Mountain Reservation, and rustic shelters like this one gave visitors a shaded place to take in the view.
