About this postcard
A long, shingled, gable-roofed building with rows of multi-pane windows stands on a heavy timber platform and boardwalk built over bare granite boulders. The sky is tinted blue above and peach at the horizon. The caption identifies it as the Summit House and Restaurant on Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The card advertises a new, modern hotel and restaurant on the summit with conveniences for a short or extended stay, and its printed text claims a view sweeping nearly 1,000 miles across parts of five states and Quebec. Mount Washington is the highest peak in the northeastern United States, and by the 1920s visitors reached the summit by the cog railway and the Mount Washington Auto Road. A note from a visitor, Fred, mentions a breezy day that called for a sweater after a week of rain.
