The sunken garden of the Governor Clinton Hotel in Kingston, New York, is laid out with beds of colorful flowers and a low white balustrade. Large weeping trees frame the garden, and a rustic wooden lattice footbridge crosses a reflecting pool in the foreground; a blue-and-white striped parasol stands at right. Sunken gardens gave hotel guests a sheltered formal retreat, and the setting reflects Kingston's Hudson Valley character. The city marked its 300th anniversary in 1952.
