The house has red roofs, a tower, and an arched entrance, the romantic Dutch-inspired design Irving created after buying the property in 1835; he lived there until his death in 1859. By the early 1900s the Hudson River estate was a literary landmark associated with the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle.
