First light colors the sky peach and blue above the still water of Lake Osceola. A wooded shoreline recedes in the distance, branches overhang the water, and an empty wooden rowboat rests at the near bank among ferns. The lake lies in Hendersonville, in the Blue Ridge country of western North Carolina, a summer resort area that drew visitors from the lowland South. The quiet dawn view fits the area's role as a mountain retreat.
