Sunset off Sandy Hook, New Jersey, 1903

About this postcard

A small open boat carrying three figures in red-and-white jerseys, one at the oars, drifts beside a red-hulled dory. Two sailboats stand on the horizon under a glowing sunset sky. The printed caption names the scene off Sandy Hook, the low sandy barrier spit at the northern end of the New Jersey shore where New York Harbor meets the Atlantic. In the early 1900s the surrounding waters were worked by fishermen and oystermen, and the view catches that working shoreline at the end of the day.
