Sunset on Lake Champlain, circa 1907

Card type

About this postcard

A low sun drops behind a dark, hazy ridge across Lake Champlain, its red disc just clearing the distant hills while chop in the foreground catches long streaks of gold and orange. A wooded point of land juts in from the right, and a faint pier or breakwater shows on the left horizon. By the time this card was printed, the lake was a well-established summer destination, with steamboats and the railroads that met its shores carrying vacationers to resorts on both the Vermont and New York sides, and sunset views over the water made a standard souvenir.
