Sunset over Great Salt Lake, Utah, circa 1939

About this postcard

A sunset sky of yellow, orange, pink and violet clouds spreads over the calm water of the Great Salt Lake, with a dark shoreline and low rocky outcrops silhouetted along the bottom of the frame and the shadowed roof of a pavilion at the right edge. The printed caption names the scene simply as a sunset over the lake. The lake's shallow, flat water mirrors the sky, which made it a dependable subject for Utah view cards; the Oquirrh and Stansbury ranges rise to the west and south of the water. Resorts along the south shore, most famously Saltair, drew excursion crowds from Salt Lake City to bathe in the brine. Deseret Book Company, the Salt Lake City bookseller and publisher associated with the LDS Church, issued the card.
