Sunset over lake with cottage and rowboat, Red Bank, NJ, 1908

Card type

About this postcard

An early-20th-century scenic view: a broad lake reflects a red and gold sunset beneath dark cloud banks, with a clump of tall trees on a grassy bank at right, a small gabled cottage with a steep roof, a wooden rail fence in the foreground, and a rowboat moored at the left shore. No place is named in the image, so it reads as a stock sunset landscape rather than a documented location. The message gives the card a travel-note context: the sender has been staying at Port Monmouth, NJ, and arranges to meet the recipient in Patchogue, Long Island, the next week. Patchogue was a South Shore resort town in the early 1900s, and generic scenic cards like this were common souvenirs for summer visitors.
