Superstition Mountain "The Quest", Arizona, circa 1946

About this postcard

A lone figure stands beside a small campfire in the desert at dusk, with a saddled horse or burro nearby. Saguaro cactus and scrub fill the foreground, and the red and purple mass of Superstition Mountain rises under a sunset sky. The caption titles the scene "The Quest." The image belongs to a series reproduced from original paintings by Lon Megargee, a Western artist whose work drew on Arizona desert and ranch life. The Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix are the legendary setting of the Lost Dutchman's gold mine.
