Supreme Court Building, Springfield, IL, circa 1930

About this postcard

A three-quarter view of the Illinois Supreme Court Building in Springfield: a long classical stone facade with a heavy cornice, tall pilasters, and rows of windows, set behind a lawn with young trees. An American flag flies from the roof. Completed in 1908, the building stands across from the State Capitol and has housed the state's highest court since. Springfield became the capital of Illinois in 1839, when the seat of government moved from Vandalia, and the court has sat there ever since.
