About this postcard

A halftone view along Surf Avenue, the main commercial thoroughfare of Coney Island, crowded with pedestrians and lined with the towers, domes and signage of the amusement district, with a large Ferris wheel dominating the center. A decorative inset at upper left shows a winged cherub holding an American flag above the words "Greetings from Picturesque America." By the early 1900s Coney Island had become the nation's most famous amusement resort, home to Steeplechase Park, Luna Park and Dreamland, all served by Surf Avenue and the elevated railway.
