Heavy surf breaks over the granite ledges at Nahant, spray rising against a pale sky, with large boulders filling the foreground at the water's edge.
Nahant is a small peninsula reaching into Massachusetts Bay northeast of Boston, edged in rock rather than long sand beaches. By the early 1900s it was a well-established summer resort, reached by steamer and railroad from the city, and its exposed outer shore drew visitors and photographers interested in rough water.
