The view shows surf breaking on a rocky shore at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, with the sea filling most of the frame under a blue sky. A line of hotels and beachfront buildings runs along the distant shore, and a low headland rises at right. By the early 1900s Hampton Beach was an established summer resort on the state's short coast, drawing visitors from inland New England towns for sea air and beach holidays.
