Swiss lake dweller scene, Neuchatel, Switzerland, circa 1915

About this postcard
Two nude male figures haul a large circular fishing net from shallow water onto a beach. Behind them are a calm lake, snow-capped mountains, and a cluster of wooden pile dwellings on stilts, with a small boat near the dwellings. The scene reconstructs a Swiss lake-dweller settlement of the kind built around Lake Neuchatel in prehistory. Such villages, with houses raised on wooden platforms over the water, were excavated across the Alpine region in the nineteenth century and became popular subjects for museum displays. Museums of the period used reconstructed scenes like this to interpret prehistoric European life.
