A rushing stream, labeled "Sylvan Rapids," pours through a narrow rock gorge at Watkins Glen, with wooden stair railings and a footbridge climbing the steep, tree-shaded bank beside it. Watkins Glen, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake in New York's Finger Lakes region, became a state park in 1906 and was long famed for its series of waterfalls and stone stairways cut through the glen; the rustic railings and paths seen here are typical of its early twentieth-century visitor improvements.
