A narrow stream, labeled "Sylvan Rapids," rushes through a deep rock gorge at Watkins Glen, with wooden stairways and railings carrying visitors along the cliff beside the water. Watkins Glen, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake in New York's Finger Lakes region, became a state park in 1906 and was long famed for its series of waterfalls and shale glens cut by Glen Creek. The rustic stair-and-bridge paths seen here were built to let tourists descend safely into the gorge.
