About this postcard
A bronze tablet set into a large granite boulder fills the view, with blue sky behind. The plaque commemorates the 1623 founding of the first settlement of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and records that the citizens of Gloucester placed it in 1907. Stage Fort Park occupies Gloucester's harbor front, the site associated with that early fishing settlement. The 1907 memorial belongs to an era when Massachusetts towns marked colonial sites with boulders and tablets, giving the city a compact civic landmark tied to its colonial origins.
