TARLETON'S OAK. CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. 44674 C18— --- Tradition says that under this oak the British cavalryman, Tarleton, pitched his tent on his raid to Charlottesville, June 4, 1781. He attempted to capture Governor Jefferson and the legislature, but Captain Jack Jouett, by taking a shorter route, arrived in time to warn the patriots of their danger.
