Teepee at Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park, MT, circa 1919

About this postcard

A teepee stands among tall evergreens near the shore of Lake McDonald, framed by trees, with the lake's blue water and mountains beyond. The caption calls Lake McDonald one of Glacier National Park's beautiful lakes and notes that it was reached by auto from Belton, on the line of the Great Northern Railway. Lake McDonald is the largest lake in the park, a long glacial valley below the peaks. Belton, renamed West Glacier in 1949, was the western gateway, and the Great Northern Railway built the park's hotels and chalets and promoted Glacier as a motor-touring destination. A teepee at the water's edge fits that tourist landscape, where camps and outfitters drew on the park's scenery and its association with the Blackfeet.
