The scene shows the small Tellskapelle at the water's edge under moonlight, with arched windows and a stone base, trees around it, and a mountain rising in the background. Moonlight reflects on the lake.
The chapel stands on Lake Lucerne at the spot where, according to Swiss legend, William Tell escaped from the boat of the Austrian bailiff Gessler. The Tell story made this stretch of the lake a familiar stop for early tourists.
