About this postcard

The Tennessee State Capitol crowns a landscaped hill, seen here from a stairway and terrace below, with its Greek Revival porticoes and central cupola-topped tower rising above the trees. Designed by architect William Strickland and completed in 1859, the building is modeled on a Greek Ionic temple and remains the seat of the Tennessee General Assembly and the governor's office; Strickland, who died before construction finished, is entombed within its north wall. The hilltop site, known as Capitol Hill, was formerly the grounds of a state penitentiary.
