Tennessee Trust Building, Memphis, TN, 1907

About this postcard

The photograph shows the Tennessee Trust Building rising above lower commercial blocks on a downtown Memphis street. Its flat roof and dense grid of windows mark it as an early office tower, while storefronts and streetcar tracks below keep the scale of the older city in view. Pedestrians and a streetcar appear at street level. The Tennessee Trust Building was among the commercial towers that changed the scale of downtown Memphis in the early 1900s, when steel-frame construction allowed tall office blocks to rise above masonry storefronts.
